What Is Thyroid Scan
It is an imaging test that scans thyroid glands. Some of the problems that it can detect may include but not limited to thyroid tumors, cancers, enlargements or even nodules.
When Is Thyroid Scan Needed
A thyroid scan may be necessary if your doctor finds out some inflammation, mass, bump or abnormal shape in your neck leading to the thyroid. Or, if you have been found out that you have hyperthyroidism and the medicines are not working, your doctor may want to see what is going on.
What Thyroid Scan Can Detect
The test can detect abnormalities in the thyroid gland. Most of the time, it is used to see if there are signs of:
- Tumors
- Nodules
- Goiter
- Hyperthyroidism cause
- Hypothyroidism
Take note that the doctor, an endocrinologist, may relate the results to other tests apart from the thyroid scan so you can have a better diagnosis.
Preparation for Thyroid Scan
You should not eat at least 2 hours before and after taking the radioactive iodine uptake. Based on experience, 2 hours is the minimum. However, your doctor and other medical staff will provide you instructions on what to do. Follow their instructions carefully.
Initially, you will need to go to the hospital twice until the session is completed. There is a 24 hour gap. You need to take a small amount of radioactive iodine and then after 24 hours you need to go back to the hospital for the scan.
How Long Is The Scan?
The scanning process usually takes 30 minutes or more. Simply ask the technician on what to expect during the scan. In most cases, patient experience regard it as tolerable.
What hospitals have thyroid scan? There are only a limited number of hospitals with this medical test. You will need to request for an appointment because they need to prepare you for the procedure.
