How can I prepare for this procedure?
You should NOT ejaculate at least 72 hours before the test which is a similar procedure as with semen analysis. Moreover, physical activities should be minimal within 2 days before the screening procedure.
What kind of doctor should I consult?
It is usually recommended by a urologist especially if you are having prostate symptoms.
Can I masturbate before the test?
Most doctors will recommend not to release semen within 3 days before the exam to monitor the health of sperm cells.
What is the recommended age for PSA test?
Most specialists recommend the exam for men starting at 45 years old according to MDAnderson. However, those with higher risks may have the exam every year starting in their 30s.
Starting from age 55 years old, screening becomes more important since cancer is at a higher risk during this period. A doctor may recommend some other tests as the patient ages.
Is fasting required for the procedure?
Fasting is not required if this is the only recommended test. However, some blood extraction steps and tests may require avoiding food before the extraction.
I consulted a urologist and asked about the right age for these tests. He said that 40 years old may be a good starting age for those with family history of prostate diseases.
Our senior citizen family members were able to undergo the test and shared that it was not a big deal. The procedure only required blood extraction and results become available after 24 hours.
