The price rate of thyroid scan in the Philippines may range from ₱ 1,500 to ₱ 4,330 or more depending on the number of sessions. Usually, private hospitals may charge a higher price than government facilities.

A cheap thyroid scan in public hospitals may start from ₱ 1,400 which could be subsidized by NGOs as well.

Note that some packages will also include an uptake study before the scan. In other facilities, it may also referred to as an ultrasound procedure depending on the prescription of the doctor.

Only a limited number of hospitals offers the service while some diagnostic centers may also have the equipment and facility.

Cheaper Cost

Government hospitals such as PGH or NKTI may offer a cheaper price. However, it is best to contact the facilities directly for inquiry and appointment. Some hospitals may require documents pertaining to charity or discounted assessment.

Price with Health Cards

Scans used for diagnostic procedures may not be covered by HMO. However, the consultation and confinement are usually adjusted for health cards to cover. If an accredited doctor has recommended the procedure, it is possible to waive its cost and be covered.

Philhealth

Philhealth may be used for medical procedures such as thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine treatment. Consult with the billing department to know more about the price covered.

A scan may be requested if you are not responding with medicines. For example, you may be taking anti-thyroid medicines or hormones but are not having good results.

What Can It Detect

Most of the time, the scan is used to see if there are signs of tumors, nodules, goiter, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

Take note that an endocrinologist, may relate the results to other tests apart from the scan so you can have a better diagnosis.

Preparation

You should not eat at least 2 hours before and after taking the radioactive iodine uptake. Based on experience, 2 hours is the minimum. However, your doctor and other medical staff will provide you instructions on what to do. Follow their instructions carefully.

Initially, you will need to go to the hospital twice until the session is completed. You need to take a small amount of radioactive iodine and then after 24 hours you need to go back to the hospital for the scan.

How Long Will It Take?

The scanning process usually takes 30 minutes or more. Simply ask the technician on what to expect during the scan. In most cases, patient experience regard it as tolerable.

You will need to request for an appointment because they need to prepare you for the procedure.

The results are usually available in a few days. In some hospitals, this may range from 2 to 3 days. However, it is best to request for an exact date from the personnel to plan ahead your schedule.
