Younger people before the onset of puberty may benefit from surgery to control the curve of the interconnected bones of the body. The price of Scoliosis surgery may range from Php 300,000 to Php 1 million. The procedure is quite expensive and one may need financial assistance to complete it.
A titanium implant may cost Php 112,000 even in a public hospital. This segment alone eats up the larger amount of expenses involved with surgery.
Public Hospitals
I have not found a specific cheaper rate among government hospitals. But we can assume that it is in the range of Php 400,000 to Php 700,000.
Due to the high cost of surgery for scoliosis, some patients may opt to get financial assistance. PCSO may cover up to Php 100,000 of the total surgery cost. Philhealth may also be able to subsidize the cost from Php 5,300 to Php 13,000 according to the case rate.
Other Expenses
Having scoliosis surgery may also involve long term rehabilitation and medication. Some patients may need to wear scoliosis braces in order to support their recovery. Physical therapy may also be included depending on the suggestion of the doctor.
Is it Painful?
Pain is the primary concern of most people looking for a surgery for scoliosis. Some may be satisfied with a scoliosis brace but for maximum benefit, a surgery may be a good option. You will not feel pain since general anesthesia is used for major surgeries like this.
It is a surgery of the spine to correct the curvature which may be considered a medical problem. Most of the conditions are mild but some may result in breathing problems. It is best to consult a doctor for any problems related to the spine. Initially, physical therapy may help for mild cases.
Initially a brace for scoliosis can help the patient with posture. But if you have a severe case and that pain becomes unbearable, you might want to consider medical intervention.
Adult Cases
Most of the surgery related to scoliosis may be observed among younger patients. As they grow, the risks coming from misaligned spines increase. It is a good idea to consult with a doctor for any problems with regards to spine health and posture.
Scoliosis surgery for children may have a higher success rate. This procedure uses a different approach compared to a surgery for adults.
Do I Need Treatment?
According to a Medical City report, the main consideration to undergo this type of surgery is “when the patient is recalcitrant to bracing, with severe rib hump, with restrictive lung disease secondary to rib anomaly, and already experiencing severe back pains” (Medical City).
It only shows that you as the patient can evaluate whether it already affects your life and pain has become a burden.
