What is Biopsy
It is a test performed on a tissue sample taken from the patient. In most cases, it is important in diagnosing abnormal tissue behavior due to cancer.
A cheap biopsy is usually available in public hospitals.
Core Needle Biopsy
For cancers that require sampling from the tumor cells, a core needle biopsy may be recommended by the doctor. The price of core needle biopsy may range from Php 3,600 in government hospitals up to Php 8,000 or more in private hospitals.
The price of ordinary biopsy in the Philippines can range from Php 200 to Php 4,000 depending on the size, organs involved and hospital type.
Note that more invasive biopsy tests may range from Php 10,000 to Php 27,000 depending on the difficulty of obtaining the tissue samples.
A biopsy that requires special instruments will be more expensive together with professional fees. Those with imaging guided biopsy such as mammogram, ultrasound or CT scan will cost higher.
In most cases, biopsy is done to help in detecting potential cancers. The specimen may be acquired in various ways which will predict the cost. Biopsies done using state of the art devices may be more expensive and could reach up to Php 20,000 just to obtain a sample specimen.
Types of Biopsy Tests
There are different types of biopsies and it will depend on the recommendation of the doctor. The most common ones include:
- Mammotome
- Core Needle Biopsy
- CT Guided
- Ultrasound Guided
- Frozen Section Biopsy
- Bone Biopsy
- Bone Marrow
- Liver biopsy
- Aspiration Biopsy
- Kidney Biopsy
- Prostate Biopsy
- Skin Biopsy
- Neck Biopsy
- Thyroid
- Surgical
- Endoscopic biopsy
- Punch biopsy
Some of the organs in which a biopsy may be performed include the brain, lungs, breast, rectum, testicles, pancreas, stomach, ovary, uterus and more.
Results
The release time of results will vary based on the requested procedure. The more invasive the collection of tissue is, the more time required before the results become available. Those done at the clinic, say for example skin biopsy, may require a shorter time.
