What is the Benefit
Electroencephalogram is a test to identify abnormalities in the brain’s activity. In most cases, it helps with the diagnosis related to stroke, epilepsy, encephalitis, brain damage, dysfunction and sleep disorders. The doctor can then prescribe succeeding treatment options if there are brain problems.
How to Prepare
The staff may request you to wash your hair before the procedure. However, you may be asked to refrain from using other hair products such as conditioner, gel or hair spray. It may also be noted that you avoid consuming caffeinated drinks 8 to 12 hours before the procedure. The complete list of instructions will come from your doctor.
What to Expect
At least 16 metal plate electrodes will be attached to your head and scalp. These instruments will be used to monitor brain activity during the test. You will be asked to stay still for several minutes to avoid any sudden changes in brain signal.
The procedure may last from 45 minutes up to 2 hours depending on the request. The test with Sleep features may be done longer.
Some procedures may be applied to you such as opening your eyes and looking at blinking lights. It is virtually painless for most patients with some reporting uncomfortable positions.
Some hospitals will be able to provide you the results the same day as the procedure. Others may need up to 24 hours before the results can be provided.
