What is HMO

HMO stands for Health Maintenance Organization. It is a company that provides assistance to members during times of medical expenses. In essence, health insurance is the primary product of an HMO company.

One characteristic of an HMO is that it has a network of medical service providers. It has accredited hospitals and doctors whom the member can avail service from.

For most Filipinos, health card is a more common term when referring to HMO. That’s why you will be asked by a hospital staff whether you are going to use a health card or not.

Benefits of HMO Health Cards

  1. The primary benefit of HMO is convenience. Your account will cover consultation fees every time you need to have a check up with a doctor.
  2. Program and benefits are customizable. You can choose only the service and benefit that you want.
  3. Most companies offer affordable health card rates even for those who are currently not employed.
  4. You have access to high quality medical services from accredited hospitals and doctors
  5. Of course just like with a health insurance, you have peace of mind. The HMO company will pay for all your covered medical bills under your plan.
  6. Prepaid health cards are also available for emergency situations.

Benefits and Features

Some HMO cards can provide various add-on services to the plan. They may include but not limited to:

  • Free dental cleaning (oral prophylaxis)
  • Annual medical exam
  • Executive check up
  • Discounts at food establishments
  • Giveaway items

Disadvantages of HMO

Similar to a health insurance, you have to pay on a regular basis for coverage.

Payments are still required even if you did not have any medical expenses for the duration of the coverage.

You are only allowed to use the health card in accredited doctors and hospitals of the company.

Only the basic consultations, some diagnostic tests and other hospital procedures and expenses may be covered.

Your expenses may not be fully reimbursed if you will avail services outside of the HMO’s network of providers.

Hello, may ilang HMO companies na optional ang paglalagay ng Dependent. Kapag nag-apply ka, pwede mong ilagay ang iyong anak as dependent at i-provide ang age. However, kasama sa computation ang bawat dependent under your account. Sa ganitong paraan, makakagamit rin and dependent ng same benefit ng principal.
