What is HMO

HMO is also referred to a health card. An account can serve as a health insurance for the member. The company will pay for your medical bills as long as you keep your account active.

Benefits

Being a senior citizen can be a bit tricky especially when it comes to financing health expenses. With a limited source of income, it can be difficult to pay for expensive health care services. That’s why it may be a good option for you to avail of a health plan that is affordable but provides good benefits.

  • Unlimited doctor consultation (depending on the plan)
  • Extensive network of hospitals and doctors
  • Easy on the pocket monthly fees (depending on the plan)
  • Coverage of a bigger amount than what you are paying for (in the event of health expenses)

HMO VS Health Insurance and Philhealth

HMO health card

One of the most attractive features of HMO or health card is that you can avail it with a relatively cheap price. This is true especially for prepaid health cards that you can use for emergency health situations. Other benefits may include unlimited doctor consultation, discounts on medical procedures and covered room and board for confinement.

Insurance

On the other hand, health insurance will usually cost more but it will cover much more as well. The higher your monthly premium is, the bigger the benefits you will get especially during critical medical concerns such as surgery or deadly diseases.

One of the good things about health insurance for seniors is that there are companies offering coverage for certain diseases. As seniors become more exposed to infections, some companies include a list of diseases they can cover up to 100%.

Philhealth

Philhealth benefits on the other hand is mostly available to senior citizens so there is no need for you to apply for it. All senior citizens are now covered by Philhealth and you can use it apart from your HMO and health insurance.

Compare Plans

We have prepared a list of HMOs that you can avail if you are a senior in the Philippines. This way, you can protect yourself from unwanted expenses when you get sick.

To do an effective comparison, it is best to look for the price rates of the HMO so you can plan ahead with your budget.

Next, see the benefits and features of the card and decide whether they are suitable for your current health needs.

Health Card and Philhealth

Can I use HMO and Philhealth at the same time? Senior citizens are automatically enrolled in Philhealth. You can get two separate benefits from your HMO plan and Philhealth. This gives you more savings in most hospital service fees.

In terms of senior citizen ID discount, it is also a separate benefit apart from your HMO and Philhealth savings.

Discount for HMO Plans

Usually, there are no discounts when you avail the HMO plans for senior citizens. However, you will get the most benefit from them in times when you need to have consultations due to your health problems. HMO health plan can be a good investment if you are a pensioner, retired employee or a self employed individual.

Requirements for Application

You may need to present documents for identification per the company’s instructions. If you are simply purchasing a prepaid HMO card for seniors, you may do so.

Some of these prepaid health cards are available from their online shopping tools.

Pre Existing Conditions

In most cases, the prepaid version of health cards do not require that you disclose your pre-existing conditions like illness and diseases. Each company may have a separate policy when it comes to existing illnesses.

See: HMO With Pre-Existing Condition

What to Choose

In choosing an HMO plan, it is best if you could see all the benefits included in the package. It is ideal if the following benefits are available in your account:

  • Unlimited check up
  • Free dental services
  • Coverage for major diagnostic tests like CT Scan, MRI, X ray and laboratory tests
  • Coverage for dependents
  • Easy payment installation
  • Money back option

Just remember that each HMO company has its own rules and terms. Adhere to their conditions and you will enjoy your senior years without having to worry about medical expenses.

  1. Greetings,
Hello… I would like to inquire about the consultation fees of neurologists and neurosurgeons here in Olongapo city!
I read that the consultation fee of a neurologist may start from P 1,000 and is a little higher if its a neurosurgeon! Let me ask if it a consultation fee of P2,000 fair?
And this is without any tests included… its just to get a medical certificate. Does this means that getting a medical certificate from a neurosurgeon costs P2,000? I really hope that you can help me with this matter and find out if it is acceptable! The patient is a pwd card holder so does pwd’s cant get a 20% discount too on consultations?
Thank you for your time and looking forward to get a response from you!

Hi, in most cases, neurosurgeon fees are higher because they have surgical specialties. If you are asking whether Php 2,000 is a fair consultation fee, I’m sorry but it is not answerable by yes or no. What you may consider is the average price. Neurosurgeons may have an AVERAGE rate of Php 1500 per consultation but this depends on location and hospital.

      1. Do you notice hospital rates or charges are quite expensive? Is it possible that rates for HMO users and cash payments are not the same? Patients’ bills wd HMOs are higher. Same as PWD or seniors, seems like the discounts are pre added them discounted. Net is still expensive making discounts useless.

One way to cross check the rates is to initially request a price list before you avail a service. Later, you may then use an HMO card, senior or PWD card to see if the hospital rates reflect that of your actual bill without applying any discounts or coverage.

  2. The amounts mentioned, are they annual or monthly payments, like P13,000, etc

      Medical Pinas

These are prepaid cards which are mostly good for 1 year upon activation. It is a one time payment. Once activated, it is valid for one year. Note that we have updated the info since there has been a price increase from some of these HMO companies.
