Is there a cheaper alternative for ICU confinement?

You’ve guessed it right. Government hospitals usually have more affordable rates when it comes to accommodation and special facilities. Major public hospitals can offer a cheap price of ₱1,000 per day .

Can I use my health card room benefits?

There are some HMO and health insurance companies that can cover payments for this room. However, it is possible that you’ll reach the Maximum Benefit Limit much earlier due to the room’s cost. Ask about the details from the insurance provider since there is only a fixed number of covered days.

You may also use your Philhealth account for most hospital procedures and fees. Patients who need ICU confinement can also avail the discounts and privileges associated with Philhealth.

Why Are They Expensive?

As the name itself implies, critical patients will require special machines to support them to recovery. You also need to realize that the hospital staff like doctors and nurses are monitoring patients in these rooms 24 hours a day. These are just some of the common reasons why rooms of this type is really expensive.

In summary, these rooms are expensive because they are utilized for patients with life-threatening conditions.

Here are the basic facilities that you can find in this type of room:

  1. Mechanical ventilators
  2. Intravenous lines (lots of them)
  3. Heart monitor
  4. Dialysis machines

There are instances when an intensive care unit stay could reach up to Php 10,000 or more per day together with facility and device costs. This is for critical patients who need special medical devices that are usually standards in the unit.

Moreover, the prices will vary among medical departments. For example, the neuro and cardiology prices will be more expensive than those regular types because of the critical organs involved for monitoring.

In our research, the most expensive rate available among top hospitals start at ₱30,000 per night. Note that such a high price could mean the use of highly advanced equipment to support the patient as well as larger room areas for convenience.

We observed that ICU patients tend to have critical illnesses including but not limited to stroke, cancer, heart attack, HIV and AIDS and those injured from accidents.

    Hello

We inquired for icu fees at St Luke’s and they said that 1 day at the icu is 150000 pesos per day (and that’s if your covid negative). Is this correct? This is a huge difference to the prices you mentioned on this site. Any clarification would be heatedly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, we didn’t specifically publish the hospital’s ICU rates on this post. However, kindly point out where you have read it and we’ll take a look. On the other hand, ICU rates on average, in most hospitals, may range from Php 2,500 to Php around Php 11,000 per day. Hospitals have their specific prices and will depend on what machines, devices and facilities the patient needs. The more critical the case is, the more expensive the rates will be. Php 150,000 per day as you have mentioned may be too expensive but only the hospital will be able to breakdown the cost for you.
